Save Muny Presents:

“Run for the Green” 5K: Lions Municipal Golf Course – 2901 Enfield Road

March 3, 2013    8:00 a.m. – 10 AM.

Imagine Running a 5K Where Ben Hogan and Ben Crenshaw Played!

Lions Muny Golf Course to be the site of a uniquely Austin event staged by Luke’s  Locker .

The second annual “Run for the Green” 5K will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013 at historical Lions Municipal Golf Course.  The event starts at 8 AM and features a competitive, chipped run, followed by a unchipped run and a fun run for kids 12 and under.  Runners will be routed through the course’s ancient oak tree stands, down fairways and around Muny’s water features, greens and bunkers.

Last year’s official starter for the race, Austin golfing legend Ben Crenshaw  grew up and lives nearby, has been a vocal and visible supporter of Muny and still plays there often.

“Anyone who has ever lived in Austin, or grew up here, knows Muny is much more than a golf course.  It’s been a place where my friends and I have met, a place where parents have left their kids to learn the game and a place for community functions, charity events and celebrations.  It’s  a special part of our city for over 88 years.  Austin just can’t afford to lose this green-space and deny future generations the same opportunity to enjoy this jewel,” Crenshaw said, adding, “I hope to start the race again this year and for many years to come.”

Lions Municipal Golf Course has been in operation since 1924 and is recognized by the Texas Hist Commission.  Muny is an Austin icon and is in peril of being closed in 2019 and replaced with retail and apartment development, according to plans being considered by the University of Texas, the owner of the Brackenridge Tract where the course is located.

Longtime Muny employee Mike Brent; an avid runner, conceptualized the race. “Every morning when we open the course, there are lots of runners, joggers, and folks taking walks with their dogs and neighbors, enjoying the open space. “People had a blast at last year’s  run and Muny is ready to hold an even bigger field this year.”

Participation cost is: Adults: $30 for chipped, $25 un-chipped fun run.  $20 for children, 12 years old and younger. All runners will receive T-shirts and prizes will be awarded.Packet pick up is March 1 and 2 at Luke’s Locker: 115 Muraida Way, Austin Tx. 78703
