At a public meeting in April 2015, the Watershed Protection Department proposed installing storm drains pipes down several streets in Tarrytown, including Rockmoor and Robinhood, to augment the existing storm drain system. The existing storm drain system, built in 1952, is undersized and drains to an underground cave. The capacity of the cave is unknown, but it is not sufficient to prevent flooding of houses on and near Meredith Street.

Based on feedback from the meeting, the City is currently evaluating other potential solutions instead of the proposed storm drain pipes.

Finding a solution to the flooding has been complicated by the cave system. It is generally desirable to avoid digging and other construction activity near a cave. In addition, discharges to a cave are regulated by the TCEQ and EPA and present water quality, cave erosion and safety issues.

Goals of this project include:

  • Reducing flooding
  • Reducing the amount of discharge entering the cave
  • Improving the water quality of the storm water entering the cave
  • Avoiding construction activity near the cave.

We are continuing to evaluate potential solutions internally and should have more information in a few months.

In the meantime, we strongly encourage homeowners, businesses and renters to consider purchasing flood insurance from their insurance agent. Flood insurance is available in Austin due to the Watershed Protection Department’s efforts. You do not need to be in a floodplain to purchase a policy. Be sure to purchase insurance for your contents as well as for the structure
